On the evening of July 31，the Beijing Renaissance Ensemble (BRE) recreated Renaissance polyphony at Genesis Beijing Community. The 15th to 16th centuries are seen as the zenith of vocal polyphony，a period marked by four major music schools：the Burgundian，Flemish，Roman，and Venetian schools. This time，Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum invited invited BRE to perform some of the era’s most representative polyphonic pieces and to guide the audience in appreciating this exquisite music.

Baroque Scene –Flute and Harp Ensemble

Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum invited young flutist Li Jiayu and harpist Lu Lingqi to deliver a brilliant ensemble performance in the Baroque style，offering the audience a unique initiation to this period’s famous musicians and their works. Featuring a flute and harp ensemble，“Baroque Scene” produced an immersive experience for attendees to savor the elegance of Baroque music. The gorgeous performance by the two young artists offered an impressive reproduction of Baroque music. During the session，the two musicians gave extensive introductions to the lives and works of leading Baroque composers Vivaldi，Bach，and Handel，and performed some of the three masters’ most brilliant pieces.

On May 22, Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum hosted Jia Shubing, a lecturer in Western music history at The Central Conservatory of Music, to discuss the Venetian School’s significance in the history of music and its role in European music in the 16th and 17th centuries. One of the era’s main music centers and home to the splendid St. Mark's Basilica, Venice saw the establishment of the first “Western” instrumental ensemble, gave rise to numerous outstanding composers, and was the dominant force in Italy’s music printing and publishing at the time. Europe’s first public opera house was established in Venice in the early 17thcentury, marking the start of music as a major commercial operation.

A Dialogue across Time–Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum

Time, captured in musical notes, weighs heavy on the heart. Famous Chinese composer Wang Xilin and his daughter Wang Ying visited Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum to present a dialogue on music across time, in which the two generations of musicians spoke openly of their personal pursuits and explorations in the world of music. Considered one of China’s most important and thought-provoking composers, Mr. Wang Xilin boasts supreme professional training and was a contract composer for Schott Music. His works exhibit a music langue of exceptional expressiveness as well as strong dramatic tones. His daughter Wang Ying studied music in Germany and is a famous young composer who has won numerous awards in international composition competitions and collaborated with a variety of internationally renowned artists and music groups. In 2017, she was awarded the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis.

Charms and Anecdotes of Oriental and Western Music –Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum

Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum invited Mr. Jing Zuoren, a famous Chinese music critic, musicologist, and a viola performer with the China National Opera House, to host an engaging lecture titled “Charms and Anecdotes of Oriental and Western Music.” During the session, he introduced key points in music appreciation in combination with a wealth of knowledge on music theory as well as historical and cultural context. For further edification, he played classical Western and Chinese music pieces including “Egmont Overture” as performed by The China Philharmonic Orchestra, “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” by Debussy, and the classical Chinese zither piece Three Variations on the Plum Blossom. His introduction made the audience’s experience of the music more discerning and immersive, helping them better appreciate and comprehend the melodious, emotional, and grand music narrative as well as the aesthetic beauty of pause in the music.

Genesis Beijing Launches Classical Music Salon of Genesis Beijing Art Forum

On January 31, Genesis Beijing, in partnership with Kuke Music, launched the “Opera Carmen Special Salon” at Genesis Beijing Community. Mr. Jia Shubing, a Western Music History lecturer at The Central Conservatory of Music, Doctor of Music from The University of Bristol, scholar with interest in early Western music, and special contributor to Scholar and Kuke Music, was invited to give the audience a richer appreciation of opera before showing a video of The Vienna State Opera performing “Carmen.”

IVM ╳ LAF –Passages：The Exhibition in Beijing

“IVM ╳ LAF – Passages：The Exhibition in Beijing” was held at the Atrium of Genesis Beijing from September 5 to 25, 2017. The first of its kind in China, the show covered four major themes：urban, passage, innovation, and thinking. Three themed salon activities and a number of small-scale guided tours were offered, encouraging visitors to reconsider issues related to urban passages at three levels：the human perspective, the scale of the city, and the global environment.

Led by world-famous tenor Fan Jingma, the “Sextuplet YAGE Performing Group”delivered a superb concert at the Atrium of Genesis Beijing.An audience of hundreds was fascinated by the charm of YAGE, and deeply impressed by the wonderful and pure artistic experience of the unconventional theater venue. YAGE uses singing to convey the profound inner emotions and true spiritual world of poets and is the first attempt to elevate an appreciation of singing in Chinese. Based on Chinese history and culture, YAGE aims to establish an original and expressive Chinese music and Chinese singing style in a dialogue and fusion with Western music.

Beijing TV Rainbow Children’s Art Troupe: 2016 Christmas and New Year Children's Concert

The 2016 Christmas and New Year Children's Concert, a special program presented by Genesis Beijing, was performed at the Atrium of Genesis Beijing on the first Christmas Eve since the opening of the Genesis Beijing Community. The nationally recognized Beijing TV Rainbow Children’s Art Troupe offered blessings for the New Year as they sang more than a dozen songs, including “Silent Night”,“Laputa Castle in the Sky”, and “The Chorus” for hundreds of listeners.

Dialogue between Liu Cixin and Kim Stanley Robinson：The Border Between Science Fiction and Reality

Kim Stanley Robinson is an American science-fiction writer and the recipient of a World Fantasy award, two Hugo awards, three Nebula awards, and six Locus awards. Liu Cixin is the first Asian to win the Hugo Award for his The Three-Body Problem, a landmark work in the history of Chinese science fiction. The two held a dialogue at the Atrium of Genesis Beijing, where they discussed their books Mars Trilogy and The Three-Body Problem, then spoke about the future of life in space and the many ways our current reality mirrors science fiction.

Design that Makes a Difference –People-Centered Norwegian Design

In collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy and Design and Architecture Norway, Genesis Beijing launched the sixth program in its series on Norwegian Culture, including the exhibition entitled “Design that Makes a Difference”, as well as a workshop and guided tour on “Inclusive Design.” Ms. Onny Eikhaug, Programme Leader at Design and Architecture Norway responsible for promoting the Center’s activities in the fields of people-centered inclusive design as a strategy for innovation, joined guests at the launch event to showcase the practice of developing inclusive design in 10 “people-centered” exhibits.

Huang Yongsong：Suzhou Prints and Sceneries During the Kang-Qian Age of Prosperity

The Chinese Culture Lecture Series hosted by Genesis Humanity Salon invited Mr. Huang Yongsong, a reputable Chinese cultural scholar and designer who founded the magazine ECHO of Things Chinese, to demystify Suzhou prints. Suzhou prints are a predecessor to the vanishing Chinese folk art of Taohuawu woodcut prints. During the session, in an attempt to shed light on the dialogue between Confucianism and Christianity over the past three to four centuries, which is a major theme in human civilization, Huang spoke on the rise and fall of Suzhou prints during the Kangxi and Qianlong period when Western culture began to influence China.

The Humanistic Landscape of Animated Images –The Work of Young Lei Lei

As part of the Genesis Art Scene series, the special program “The Humanistic Landscape of Animated Images –The Work of Young Lei Lei”was launched at Hao Space. During the salon themed “Fiction and Reproduction”, Lei Lei talked about his road to creativity and his personal understanding of art. Several of his experimental animations were presented, including “Recycled”, “Hand Colored”, and “Books on Book.” On the same day, Lei Lei’s solo exhibition “A One-man Animation Film Studio” opened at the Atrium of Genesis Beijing, providing a full retrospective of the artist’s work over the past six years.
